214 Area Code: Dallas's Original Number

Area code 214 serves the Dallas, Texas area and was one of the original area codes of 1947. This guide explains its history, the 972 split, the 469 and 945 overlays, which counties and cities the regulator names, and how to dial a 214 number.

By EaseDial Editorial · Sources checked October 2026 · United States

Area code 214 opened in January 1947 as one of the original area codes. The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) says it was split in 1996 to create 972. The line between the two was later removed, and overlay codes 469 and 945 now share the Dallas area with 214 and 972.

Quick answer

  • 214 serves Dallas, Texas. It opened in January 1947 (FCC) and was one of the original area codes (PUC).
  • 972 was split from 214 in 1996. The PUC says the 214/972 line was eliminated in 1999, when 469 became an overlay on the combined area.
  • 945 followed as a fourth code. The PUC approved it in March 2020, and numbers beginning with 945 could be assigned from January 15, 2021.
  • Local calls in the overlay region require ten digits (PUC, 2021). Dial 1 plus ten digits for long distance.

How 214 became Dallas's code

  1. January 1947: Area code 214 opens. The FCC lists the opening date, and the PUC calls 214 one of the original area codes implemented in 1947 as part of the North American Numbering Plan.
  2. November 1990: Area code 903 opens, according to the FCC. Per Wikipedia, 903 took the eastern portion of the 214 area. The regulator sources checked do not describe that split.
  3. September 1996: Area code 972 opens (FCC). The PUC says the 214 area was split into the 214 and 972 areas in 1996. Per Wikipedia, 214 was then limited to Dallas and Dallas County, which the PUC does not state.
  4. 1999: The line dividing 214 and 972 is eliminated, and 469 is introduced as an overlay covering their combined geographic area (PUC release, March 3, 2020). The FCC lists 469 as opened in July 1999. A PUC web page says 1998, so the PUC's own sources disagree. See the note under the figure.
  5. October 18, 2019: The PUC announces it is reviewing a NANPA petition for a new overlay area code.
  6. March 3, 2020: The PUC approves an additional area code, later assigned as 945. The release says the remaining 214, 469, and 972 numbers were on track to run out in the first three months of 2021.
  7. January 15, 2021: Customers requesting a new number in the overlay region may be assigned a number beginning with 945.

Where area code 214 is used

Because the 214/972 line was removed, the PUC no longer describes 214 as a separate territory. Its Dallas area codes page says you or your business could be assigned any of the area codes when you move or add lines. The PUC's October 2019 release says the overlay would cover Grayson, Denton, Collin, Hunt, Tarrant, Dallas, Rockwall, Kaufman, Johnson, Ellis, and Hill counties.

The PUC's list of 214 prefixes, in a 2024 archived copy, shows 214 numbers assigned to rate centers including Dallas, Allen, Carrollton, Cedar Hill, Celina, De Soto, Ennis, Frisco, Grand Prairie, Irving, Lewisville, McKinney, Midlothian, Plano, Prosper, Red Oak, Rockwall, Seagoville, and Waxahachie. A rate center is a billing area, not a boundary. The sources checked do not give an official map of where 214 numbers are found today, so confirm a specific address with your phone provider.

Why 214 added codes

The PUC's March 2020 release says the region added codes "to accommodate continued population growth." In October 2019 the PUC said NANPA projected that the three existing area codes would run out of numbers by the second quarter of 2021. The March 2020 release said the remaining numbers were on track to run out in the first three months of 2021, and that 945 was expected to meet numbering needs for an additional thirteen years.

The new code is an overlay. Under an overlay, existing numbers keep their area code, and new lines can get the new code. The release says adding a fourth code should be a fairly simple process, since residents of the region had already adapted to ten-digit dialing. The PUC voted on the matter in docket 48765.

NANPA's April 2025 analysis projects that the 214/469/945/972 area will run out of numbers in the third quarter of 2035, based on data as of March 1, 2025. Forecasts move from one analysis to the next, so treat the date as an estimate.

Neighboring area codes in the Dallas area

The table shows how each code relates to 214, based on the PUC and FCC sources in this guide. Other codes serve areas outside the sources checked, so the table does not claim to show every neighbor.

Overlay codes that share 214's territory

An overlay adds a new area code to the same geographic area, so existing numbers do not change. Two overlay codes now serve the Dallas area alongside 214 and 972:

  • 469 (1999): the first overlay, covering the combined 214 and 972 area.
  • 945 (approved March 3, 2020; numbers from January 15, 2021): the fourth code for the region.

Because the codes overlap, two neighbors on the same street can have different area codes. The PUC says the price of a call, the coverage area, and other rates and services do not change due to the overlay, and calls that were local stay local.

Time zone and daylight saving time

Area code 214 uses Central Time. The tz database lists America/Chicago as "Central (most areas)". Federal rules for the boundary between the Central and Mountain zones (49 CFR 71.7) run along the east line of Hudspeth County in far west Texas, and the Dallas area lies east of that line.

NIST says daylight saving time begins at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November. The NIST page lists Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Arizona as places that do not observe it, and Texas is not on that list. In 2026, NIST gives March 8 and November 1 as the change dates.

How to dial a 214 number

North American numbers have three parts: a country code, a three-digit area code, and a seven-digit local number. NANPA says the ITU assigned country code 1 to the NANP area. The PUC says customers in the overlay region dial 10 digits for local calls within and between the overlay area codes, and 1+10 digits for long distance. Customers can still dial three digits to reach 911.

The PUC also asks customers to give their number with the area code and to check any equipment that stores it, such as security systems, fax machines, PBXs, and call forwarding settings.

Caller ID and scams with a 214 number

The FTC warns that "Scammers can make any name or number show up on your caller ID." That is called spoofing. Scammers can also match the first six digits of your own number, which the FTC calls neighbor spoofing.

  • If you pick up and do not recognize the caller, the FTC advises that you hang up.
  • Letting an unknown call go to voicemail is one option.
  • The FTC says call blocking is your best defense against unwanted calls.

The sources checked do not say that 214 numbers are targeted more than others. A 214 number shows the code that was assigned, not who is calling or where they are. Because 469, 972, and 945 share the same region, a 214 caller ID is not a reliable sign that the caller is in Dallas.

Choosing a 214 number for a business

214 is the original Dallas area code, but the PUC says a customer in the region could be assigned any of the overlay codes when adding a line. A new line may carry 469, 972, or 945 instead of 214, and the area code does not show which part of the region the business is in.

Because the codes share territory, route calls by team or extension, not by area code. Ask your provider which code a new line gets, since that depends on its current inventory.

Whether a specific 214 number can be assigned to your business depends on your phone provider and its current inventory. This guide does not make claims about availability.

Important: Confirm availability with your provider before you plan a campaign or print a number on materials.

Before you use a 214 number

  • Confirm the number is available from your provider, and get its terms in writing.
  • Ask who owns the number and whether it can be moved to another provider if you switch.
  • Confirm which area code your line uses. 214, 469, 972, and 945 all serve the same region.
  • Set 10-digit dialing for numbers in all four codes before you go live, because the PUC says customers in the overlay region dial 10 digits for local calls.
  • Update stored numbers on equipment that uses your phone number, as the PUC advises, and print the full 10-digit number with the area code.
  • Route calls by team or extension, because 214 and its overlays share one territory.
  • Plan for caller ID. A 214 number does not prove who is calling, and neighbor spoofing copies the first six digits of your own number.

Frequently asked questions

Which area is the 214 area code for?

Area code 214 serves the Dallas, Texas area. It was one of the original area codes of 1947. In 1996 it was split to create 972, and in 1999 the line between 214 and 972 was eliminated when 469 was added as an overlay. The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) says a customer in the region could be assigned any of the overlay area codes, which now include 945.

Is area code 214 being split or replaced?

No new split of 214 appears in the sources checked for this guide. The PUC approved 945 as an overlay in March 2020, and numbers beginning with 945 became available to customers on January 15, 2021. NANPA's April 2025 analysis projects that the 214/469/945/972 area will run out of numbers in the third quarter of 2035. Projections change with each analysis.

Do I need to dial 10 digits for a 214 number?

Yes, for local calls in the overlay region. The PUC says customers there dial 10 digits for local calls within and between the overlay area codes, and 1+10 digits for long distance. Customers can still dial three digits for 911.

Does a 214 number mean the caller is in Dallas?

Not always. The FTC says scammers can make any name or number show up on caller ID, and neighbor spoofing matches the first six digits of your own number. A 214 number shows the code that was assigned, not who is calling or where they are.

What time zone is area code 214 in?

Central Time. The tz database lists America/Chicago as "Central (most areas)", and the federal rule for the Central and Mountain zone boundary runs through far west Texas. Daylight saving time starts at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November (NIST).
