Methodology
How we calculate recording storage
All formulas are based on standard codec specifications and publicly documented cloud storage pricing. Every figure can be independently verified.
1. MB per call
MB per call = (kbps ÷ 8) × duration_seconds ÷ 1024. Bitrates used: G.711 = 64 kbps, G.729 = 8 kbps, Opus = 32 kbps, Stereo G.711 = 128 kbps. These are the standard ITU-T and RFC-specified payload bitrates for each codec — not compressed archive sizes.
2. GB per month
GB per month = (calls/day × MB/call × working_days) ÷ 1024. Working days default to 22/month (industry standard for contact center capacity planning). Adjust for 24/7 operations by entering a higher daily call volume rather than adjusting working days.
3. Total retained GB
Total GB = GB/month × retention_months. This assumes all recordings are kept on the same storage tier for the full retention period — a conservative (higher) estimate. In practice, tiered storage strategies reduce the effective cost significantly.
4. Storage cost
Monthly cost = total_GB × cost_per_GB/month. Annual cost = monthly cost × 12. Default cost ($0.023/GB) reflects AWS S3 Standard pricing as of July 2025 — the most widely used benchmark for cloud object storage. Enterprise agreements and alternative providers may be significantly lower.
