617 Area Code: Boston and Eastern Massachusetts

Area code 617 has served Boston and the communities around it since 1947. This guide covers its history, the splits that created 508 and 781, the 857 overlay that shares its territory, and how to dial 617 numbers.

By EaseDial Editorial · Sources checked October 2026 · United States

Area code 617 is one of the original North American area codes, created in 1947. It first covered eastern Massachusetts. Splits in 1988 and 1997 created 508 and 781, and since 2001 area code 857 has overlaid the same territory.

Quick answer

  • 617 is a Boston-area code in Massachusetts, created in 1947.
  • Splits in 1988 (508) and 1997 (781) reduced it to the Boston area.
  • Area code 857 has overlaid 617 since 2001, so both codes share the same territory.
  • 10-digit local dialing has been mandatory since that overlay.

How 617 became the Boston code

  1. 1947: 617 is created as one of the original North American area codes. It serves eastern Massachusetts. Western Massachusetts keeps 413.
  2. 1988: 508 splits from 617, taking the western, northern, and southern parts of the territory.
  3. 1989: Permissive dialing of 617 ends across eastern Massachusetts.
  4. 1997: 781 splits from 617, taking the northern, western, and southern parts that remain.
  5. 2001: 857 is overlaid onto 617. Wikipedia gives May 2, 2001 as the start date. It says 617 was close to exhaustion again, driven by demand for lines for fax machines, pagers, mobile phones, and BBS lines.
  6. October 2025: A NANPA analysis projects the 617/857 area to be exhausted in 2059, as reported by Wikipedia. A later NANPA report from April 2026 is reported to show a different date (see the outlook).

Where area code 617 is used

617 serves Boston and the communities around it. Wikipedia names these places among those covered: Belmont, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Milton, Newton, Quincy, Somerville, Watertown, and Winthrop.

Wikipedia describes the area as including portions of Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, and Suffolk counties. Other directories list different county sets, so use the city list rather than county lines when you plan local marketing or routing.

Permissive dialing: when the old code still worked

When a split creates a new code, the old code usually keeps working for a while. This is called permissive dialing. It gives callers time to learn the new code before it becomes required.

  • After the 1988 split that created 508, 617 kept working across eastern Massachusetts until 1989.
  • The 2001 overlay made 10-digit local dialing mandatory across the 617 and 857 territory.

For a business, the practical lesson from 1989 and 2001 is to update every dial pattern in your phone system, not only the numbers on your materials. Customers who learned the old pattern may keep using it for a while.

The overlay that shares 617's territory

An overlay adds a new area code to the same geographic area, so existing numbers do not change. Only one code overlays 617 in the sources we checked:

  • 857 (2001): overlaid onto 617 to relieve number shortages. Both codes cover the same territory.

Because the codes overlap, two neighbors on the same street can have different area codes. The area code does not show which building or floor a number belongs to.

Why 617 ran short

By 2001, 617 was close to running out of numbers. Wikipedia attributes the pressure to demand for extra lines for devices and services such as mobile phones, fax machines, pagers, and BBS lines.

The 1988 and 1997 splits moved part of the territory to 508 and 781. The 2001 overlay then added 857 so that the Boston area could keep getting new numbers without moving existing customers.

Outlook: exhaustion projections

We found no planned boundary change or new code for 617 in the sources we checked. The one forward-looking figure is Wikipedia's report of an October 2025 NANPA analysis, which projects the 617/857 area to be exhausted by 2059.

NANPA's own pages could not be opened, so that date is attributed, not confirmed. A later NANPA report from April 2026 is reported, in a search excerpt, to project Q3 2066. We could not open that report, so we do not state that date as fact. Check NANPA's current exhaust reports before you rely on any exhaustion date.

How to dial a 617 number

North American numbers have three parts: a country code, a three-digit area code, and a seven-digit local number. Since the 2001 overlay, local calls within the 617 and 857 territory require all 10 digits.

Using a 617 number for business

A 617 number shows where the number was assigned, not where your team works. Because 617 and 857 share one territory, a Boston-area customer can call from either code, so route both to the same team.

Customers in nearby codes may use other area codes. In the neighbor table, Worcester is in 508 and Lowell is in 978, so a Boston-only number may not match a regional audience. Whether a particular number is available depends on your phone provider and its current inventory, not on the code alone.

Important: Confirm availability with your provider before you plan a campaign or print a number on materials.

Before you use a 617 number

  • Confirm the number is available from your provider, and get its terms in writing.
  • Ask who owns the number and whether it can be moved to another provider if you switch.
  • Route 617 and its overlay, 857, to the same team. A rule that matches only 617 misses every 857 call.
  • Account for neighboring codes in call routing. 781 and 508 came from 617 (978 came from 508), and 339, 774, and 351 overlay them. A rule written only for 617 and 857 will miss those callers.
  • Set 10-digit dialing for local calls before you go live. Stored 7-digit dial patterns will fail, since 10 digits have been required since the 2001 overlay.
  • Plan for caller ID. A local number does not prove who is calling, because the FTC notes that caller ID can be spoofed.

Frequently asked questions

Which area is the 617 area code for?

Area code 617 serves Boston and surrounding communities in eastern Massachusetts. Wikipedia lists Belmont, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Milton, Newton, Quincy, Somerville, Watertown, and Winthrop among the places it covers.

Is area code 617 being split or replaced?

No split or replacement is documented in the sources we checked. Area code 857 has been overlaid on the same territory since 2001. Wikipedia reports that a NANPA exhaust analysis from October 2025 projects the 617/857 area to be exhausted in 2059. A later NANPA report, from April 2026, is reported in a search excerpt to project a different date. We could not open NANPA to confirm either figure directly.

Does a 617 number mean the caller is in Boston?

Not necessarily. The FTC warns that scammers can make any name or number show up on caller ID, a practice called spoofing. A local-looking number is not proof of who is calling.

Do I have to dial all 10 digits for a 617 number?

Yes, for local calls. Wikipedia states that 10-digit local dialing has been mandatory since the 2001 overlay of 857 onto 617. Permissive dialing of 617 ended in 1989, after the 508 split.

Is area code 857 the same as 617?

Area code 857 is an overlay on the same territory as 617, added in 2001. Both codes serve Boston and the communities around it, and local calls require all 10 digits.
