Call Forwarding

Forward calls based on availability and rules.

Call forwarding routes incoming calls to a different destination when the primary extension or number is unavailable — to mobile, voicemail, another team member, or an external line.

Definition

What is call forwarding?

Call forwarding redirects an incoming call from its original destination to another number or extension. It can trigger automatically based on conditions (no answer, busy, outside business hours) or be set manually by the user.

Forwarding Types

Types of call forwarding

Unconditional

All calls to the extension are forwarded immediately to the configured destination — regardless of availability. The original extension never rings.

No Answer

Calls forward only if the extension is not answered within a configured number of rings. The extension rings first; forwarding kicks in when no one picks up.

Busy

Calls forward when the extension is already on a call. The caller is not placed in hold — they are redirected to the forwarding destination immediately.

Time-Based

Calls forward based on the time of day or day of the week. Different destinations can be configured for business hours, after hours, weekends, and holidays.

Use Cases

When teams use call forwarding

Remote and Mobile Teams

Forward a desk extension to a mobile number so team members never miss a call when away from the office. Callers dial one number; the person is reachable wherever they are.

After-Hours Coverage

Forward to voicemail or an external answering service when the office is closed. Callers get a prompt response rather than an unanswered ring.

Team Availability

Forward an extension to a colleague when an employee is on lunch, on PTO, or in a meeting. Calls reach someone who can help rather than going unanswered.

FAQs

Call Forwarding FAQs

What is call forwarding?

Call forwarding redirects an incoming call from its original destination to another number or extension. It can trigger automatically based on conditions — such as no answer, busy line, or outside business hours — or be set manually by the user from the admin portal or their desk phone.

How does call forwarding differ from call transfer?

Call forwarding redirects a call before it is answered at the original destination — the caller is routed elsewhere without the original agent picking up. A call transfer happens mid-call: an agent answers the call and then moves it to another person or extension. Forwarding is a pre-call routing decision; transfer is a live-call action.

Can I forward calls to a mobile number?

Yes. Call forwarding destinations can include external mobile numbers. This allows a desk extension to forward to a mobile so the person never misses a call when away from the office.

Can I set different forwarding rules for business hours vs after hours?

Yes. Time-based forwarding rules let you configure separate destinations for business hours and after hours. During business hours calls reach the extension normally; outside business hours they forward to voicemail, an answering service, or a different number.

What happens to the original caller when calls are forwarded?

The caller experience depends on configuration. Calls can ring at the forwarding destination before connecting, or go directly to voicemail if the destination is voicemail. The caller may or may not be aware the call was forwarded depending on how the rule is set up.

Can I forward calls to voicemail?

Yes. Voicemail is a valid forwarding destination. This is a common configuration for after-hours rules — calls during business hours reach the extension, calls outside business hours forward to voicemail.

Can calls be forwarded to another country?

International forwarding depends on the destination number and routing configuration. Contact EaseDial to confirm international forwarding availability for your specific setup and destination countries.

Can multiple forwarding rules be active at once?

Priority order determines which rule applies when multiple conditions could match. Unconditional forwarding (forward all calls always) takes precedence over conditional rules such as no-answer or busy forwarding. Rules are evaluated in priority order and the first matching rule is applied.
